Laurencekirk Scout Group Council has agreed to press ahead with emergency work on Laurencekirk Scout Hut, and to firm up a plan for funding and executing a staged refurbishment of the premises.
The group discussed 4 options with the help of an expert panel comprising Linda Babbs (Development Officer with the Council for Voluntary Services Aberdeenshire Central & South), Sue Briggs (Senior Community Learning and Development Worker, Mearns Community Centre) and Allen Skinner FRICS (John Duguid Partnership, Chartered Quantity Surveyors, Dundee).
As a result, the office bearers will initiate emergency works immediately and update the earlier, costed plans for a staged refurbishment. After the accounts have been independently examined, the group will also be stepping up efforts to attract grants and donations. We have £14,000 in our hall fund but up to £120,000 will be required. Any offers of help with labour would reduce costs and be gratefully received.
It was also agreed that exploratory work on the idea of a new Scout Centre in Laurencekirk on the site of the new Mearns Academy should continue. We have been advised that funding is available for a professional Feasibility Study which would be the first step.
